Communities for Cycling

The PCC views the planning and engineering departments of cities and towns in South Carolina as effective and necessary partners in regional and statewide bicycle transportation progress. By developing a venue for peer-to-peer collaboration among these various departments statewide, the PCC hopes to establish a forum for the exchange of bicycle transportation innovation, insights, and recommendations.

Through collaboration, stakeholders from SC cities and towns will identify common issues and collectively develop and implement South Carolina bicycle transportation design specifications. In fostering a cooperative approach to bicycle issues, and by working together, stakeholders can share information and best practices, saving time and money. Stakeholders will convene in a forum setting to share these best practices and policies, and the forum will be known as South Carolina Communities for Cycling.

Like its national namesake, NACTO's Cities for Cycling, Communities for Cycling will be an evolving, unified forum of South Carolina city and town stakeholders that are working towards local and statewide bicycle improvements.

The Cities of Charleston and Greenville will take a leadership role in prompting other South Carolina cities' and towns' involvement in the forum. The PCC will oversee the activities of this forum and ensure its long-term vitality and relevance to South Carolina public policy.

The PCC will be developing bylaws detailing the structure and organization of the forum. Additionally, the PCC, along with the Cities of Charleston and Greenville, will be developing an action plan for the scope of work and implementation of the statewide bicycle design specifications. Both the bylaws and scope of work/implementation plan will be ready for review at the next SC Communities for Cycling meeting, which will occur in February/March 2012.
